Alison Holmes

I studied painting and drawing at Edinburgh College of Art from 1945 to 1949, achieving a post-diploma scholarship. I went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London (1953-54), and since then have worked as a professional portrait painter in Sussex, Shropshire and Powys. For a commissioned portrait, I generally ask for two or three morning sittings, taking photographs so that I can continue working on my own. I can work entirely from photography, but I prefer to work from life so that I can get the all-round character of the sitter, whether a child or adult. I work in a very informal situation and enjoy entertaining my sitters - and being entertained by them. I do not frame my work, as I feel that the choice of frame is a very personal one. Fees: head and shoulders against background, from ?350; 3/4 length against background, from ?450.
